Indian Tea Genome Sequences
(A project funded by National Tea Research Foundation)
Mission
Tea [Camellia sinensis (L.) O. Kuntze] is one of the oldest, most widely consumed, and least expensive natural beverages, known world over for its heritage brew, with various flavors and antioxidant properties. Tea is an important plantation crop of India and earns huge foreign exchange by export. India is largest consumer and second largest producer of tea in the world. The genomic resources in Indian tea are much less compared to the others crops. Past several decades the varietal improvement is based on conventional breeding through selection of the existing bushes. Genetic erosion, lack of mutant and non-availability of bi-allelic mapping population or structured population are some of the major bottle necks in tea breeding. Tea Board of India and National Tea research Institute (NTRF) lunched Indian tea genome sequencing project to decode whole genome sequence of most popular Indian Tea clone (TV1). The high quality draft sequence of tea genome will facilitate the studies related to inheritance of agronomically important traits in tea, for monitoring the transmission of specific genes or genomic regions from parents to progeny.
